
The eighth morning in Silver Bay arrived with a thin light that barely touched the water. Elena woke early. The weight of the previous day still rested on her chest β the forced window, the second letter, the name of the cottage owner, and the thin break that had opened between her and Adrian. She sat on the edge of the bed for a long time before she rose. The photograph of her mother watched from the table. Elena touched the frame gently and whispered, βHelp me see clearly.β
