The fifth day in Silver Bay began with a sky that looked almost peaceful. Pale light spread across the water, and the wind was softer than it had been for days. Elena woke with the memory of the old house still clear in her mind. She remembered the wide hallway, the quiet sitting room, and the careful way Adrian had spoken of the unopened letter. The feeling of closeness from the day before stayed with her like a warm current under her skin. At the same time the warning from the whispers remained. The house held more than he had shown her. The past was not finished.
She prepared slowly, drank her tea, and walked down the path to the beach. Adrian was waiting near the rocks. When he saw her he gave a small nod. His face looked less closed than before, yet something watchful lived in his eyes.
